Putting the brakes on the Tar Sands
Tar Sands is the antithesis of all climate change solutions
Dirty Tar Sands oil is a step backward on our path to a clean energy future. Right now, we need to stop the accelerating development of Tar Sands projects. That's why we are going to work hard to stop pipeline projects which plan to deliver more of the world's dirtiest oil to the world—encouraging growth of the Tar Sands industry.
Reducing the negative impacts of the Tar Sands
North America needs to shift to a clean energy economy that dramatically reduces our use of fossil fuels. Governments must implement the climate and energy policies to drive this shift. Also, the US government and US-based companies must stop buying Tar Sands oil and products refined from it.
The Canadian government must minimize the environmental impact of the Tar Sands while shifting to a green energy economy by
- Enforcing a limit on greenhouse gas emissions from the Tar Sands;
- Cleaning up the toxic tailings and reducing air pollution;
- Creating new protected areas in the region to provide habitat for wildlife, and;
- Respecting Aboriginal rights.
To phase out dirty fossil fuels, the largest contributors to global warming, there must be a multifaceted, worldwide approach. Some aspects of this vision for a clean energy future include
- Reducing overall energy usage;
- Phasing in clean, renewable energy;
-
Planning more sustainable communities and transportation systems;
-
Building more efficient vehicles, appliances and buildings that run on clean energy.
