Sacred Headwaters Communities

The Sacred Headwaters is the area where the Stikine, Nass and Skeena Rivers all begin. The salmon and trout from these rivers have helped sustain the Tahltan and downstream First Nations for thousands of years. The First Nations are concerned about the effect Royal Dutch Shell's plans for coalbed methane extraction would have on wild salmon, wildlife and their way of living in this area.

Temporary Victory

As part of a northern coalition, we worked with the Tahltan and downstream nations to fight Shell, which had been awarded a 400,000-hectare tenure in 2004 by the BC government. Several strategies by all players led to the Tahltan receiving a two-four year moratorium on coalbed methane drilling in the Sacred Headwaters.

Currently, we are engaging in on-going efforts to try to support the Tahltan and downstream nations find permanent solutions beyond the moratorium.
