New Radio Ads Ramp Up Climate Push in Swing Ridings of Kitchener, Waterloo, and London
Parents Urged to Use Their Unique Voting Power to Protect Kids' FutureKitchener Waterloo and London, ON -Radio ads targeting
residents of the swing ridings of Kitchener Waterloo and London started
today on popular stations as part of an escalating voter outreach campaign,
Your Vote Their Future, to urge federal politicians to take stronger action
on global warming.
The radio ad, called "Holy Ship," features a child rhyming off the predicted
impacts of global warming - rising sea levels, scarier storms, famine and
war - and asking why his parents aren't doing more to protect his future,
will run over the next two weeks on CHYM FM, 570 News and FM 96.
"We're running these ads to remind parents that if we don't change
directions our kids will inherit the worst impacts of climate change, and
that the upcoming UN climate summit is where the direction can change but
our federal government must hear the call," said Jean-Michel Toriel of
ForestEthics in Kitchener Waterloo, who is also a new father.
A month ago, with the campaign kick-off, canvassers started going door to
door delivering thousands of door hangers to key neighbourhoods in Kitchener
Centre, Kitchener Waterloo, London West and London Fanshawe.
Similar efforts are underway in the GTA, Ottawa, and in Quebec.
"Parents have the power to protect their children's future from the threat
of climate change. Londoners need to speak up now so all parties hear loud
and clear our demand for real action on climate change," said Melissa
Whittle, Environmental Defence's local organizer in London.
In December, countries will gather to negotiate cuts to global warming
pollution. Canada will either support strong action to reduce emissions and
move to a clean energy economy or block progress to protect the tar sands.
Residents of Kitchener Waterloo and London have a unique role to play
because the federal ridings, Kitchener Waterloo, Kitchener Centre, London
West and London Fanshawe, are a high priority for the political parties
given their status as tight races.
The ads build on the work of Environmental Defence, ForestEthics and the
Polaris Institute to engage citizens in 11 swing ridings in Ontario and
Quebec. The non-partisan initiative includes 7 local organizers in the
ridings as well as dozens of volunteers, and is encouraging voters to
contact their MPs to call from strong global warming action.
