Junk mailers don’t care that they’re wasting your time and invading your privacy. They don’t mind that they’re destroying 100 million trees a year, a major line of defense against global warming. Ever since the enormously popular Do Not Call Registry was created six years ago, the special interests that profit from junk mail have been trying to block Do Not Mail legislation in 20 different states. So far they’ve succeeded.
But the times are changing. On March 23, San Francisco has the chance to become the first municipality in the country to pass a resolution in support of Do Not Mail. Other cities will follow. New York and Florida have introduced new legislation, and this time they’ll have a powerful, national campaign to support them. Over 80,000 people have signed the petition at DoNotMail.org—and together, we’re about to make junk mail history.
